VINE PRAYER: PRAY GOD’S WORD TO RESIST PRIDE AND STAY HUMBLE

Humble yourself. It's not about you looking good, it's about God's glory.

Father, it’s because of your kindness we’ve lived these many years and here’s something we’ve learned. Humility is humbling for those of us with ability. The fact we’re able to plan and execute a vision is the reason we need to humble ourselves.

It takes humility to stop and say, “not my will, your will be done.”

And Lord, it’s frustrating when we’re fully capable of doing what You assign us one way—the way that suits our skill set. But You tell us to do it a different way—the way You get the glory.

But You give us a choice: humble ourselves and go your way or fail going ours.

When we go your way, You give us grace to do what you’ve called us to do. So even if we feel awkward, when we’re in your will, we win. The pride route ends in failure and embarrassment.

Because it’s not about us looking good, it’s about your glory.

So, Father, we thank You for this gentle reminder: any ability we have is purely by your grace. Thank you for teaching us the principle of honoring You with what You first gave us, like faith, talents, resources, and our very lives.

Holy Spirit, we need a teachable spirit with ears to hear your instruction. We know what it’s like to glimpse God’s plan. We run ahead doing what seems best to us, fully confident in our skills—ignorant of your wind of opposition. And we know the messes we’ve made being out of step with You.

Not my way, Yahweh.

We reject confidence in our flesh. We esteem your counsel over our ability. And we choose to live expectant of enjoying your gracious supply.

It’s in Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Prayer inspired by James 4:6.
